Justice Prevails: Vindication for a Law Enforcement Whistleblower

In a powerful affirmation of moral courage, retired Joliet Police Sergeant Javier Esqueda has been cleared of all criminal charges stemming from his brave decision to expose the truth. As the 2021 recipient of the Lamplighter Award for Moral Courage in Law Enforcement, Sgt. Esqueda exemplified the very principles our organization stands for when he chose to release footage of Eric Lurry's in-custody death, despite knowing the potential consequences.

Sergeant Javier Esqueda (Joliet Police Department, IL)

For over four years, Sgt. Esqueda endured persecution for choosing truth over silence. Today, we celebrate not just his vindication, but the ripple effects of his courageous act – a civil rights investigation that exposed systemic issues within the Joliet Police Department and reaffirmed the vital importance of law enforcement whistleblowers in our society.

The Lamplighter Project stands firm in our conviction that those who illuminate the darkness of injustice deserve our unwavering support and recognition. Sgt. Esqueda's journey reminds us that while the path of a whistleblower is often lonely and fraught with challenges, justice and truth will ultimately prevail.
